There are numerous lakes in the Charente many of which have designated swimming beaches/areas. The nearest one to Maison Renard is at Roumazieres. It isn't signposted but drive through Roumazieres towards Limoges and turn right at the second set of traffic lights onto the D 161 drive for approx 1 mile past the cemetery on the left 100yds turn left and onto a gravel road, down the hill and the swimming area and lake are visible. A life guard is usually on duty. Everything is free and there is a small kiosk selling drinks and ice-creams. A shower is also available for use after swimming.
Another very nice lake with designated swimming areas and life guards is La Casa Nat and La Plage de la Guerlie at Videix. Both have restaurant/cafe facilities. This lake is just off the D13 from La Rochefoucauld near Vemeuil.
